Welcome to Church in Transition. Even though Coronavirus is still with us, our new, flexible worship pattern will still blend on - line services and home deliveries and emailed copies of Church in Transition. This week we will be looking at: 1 Samuel 3 v. 1 - 10.
Psalm 95 v. 1 - 7 1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice,’”

Loving and gracious God we thank you for the past week. The conversations we have had and the tasks that we have carried out. We thank you that we are able to come to you just as we are, weary, tired and looking for direction. Imperfect and with many faults, but even so you accept us just as we are and you love us just the same. We thank you that we are still able to come before you in the busyness of our day, to worship you, and to offer ourselves in service to you. Help us, Lord to be still in your presence, be still in our hearts and minds as we prepare to hear your word. Lord we are still living in strange and difficult times, help us as we continue to be in lockdown to focus on you. Lord we ask that you will help us to continue to do the right things and follow your example. We pray for each other that we may know that you are near us and that you are with us even though we as a Church cannot physically meet together. So, as we come together at this time we do so with an open heart and an open mind. Help us to hear what you are saying to us but not just hear but to act also. Many times, we hear things, but don’t do anything about it. Help us through your strength, power and guidance to fulfil our purpose and work for you in this place. Help us Lord to support one another in these difficult times. Help us to encourage each other Lord, and not to criticise, to build up and not to knock down, to develop and move forward on our journey of faith together. Help us to build on the past that you have given us to prepare us for our future together with you. Lord all that we have been given is given to us by you. So Lord we bow before you now in humble thanks for all that you have given to us. And as we give thanks, we are also mindful that we have done wrong things and that we have missed opportunities, said unkind things and not been as you would want us to be. So, at this time we come today to say sorry. To say sorry for our wrong doings and our inward-looking ways. Help us Lord to open our hearts to you. Help us Lord to say thank you more often to each other and to you. So, Lord, we thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus Christ. We ask this prayer in and through you.

Our father who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
forever and ever AMEN.

1 Samuel 3 v. 1 - 10
The Lord Calls Samuel
3 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. 2 One-night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So, he went and lay down. 6 Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was

calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So, Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Well, I know I am renowned far and wide for being late or possibly pushing my luck when it comes to being there on time, but you may say this is ridiculous. The reading that we have just read is normally associated with the 2nd Sunday of Epiphany which was the 17th of January this year. And we are now on the 14th of February!! Nearly a month late, I think this time I have really excelled myself!! Anyway, I hope everyone is keeping well and that we are continuing to build on our Advent and Christmas journey. That we have carried with us the excitement we shared together, and I hope that we have continued this on the journey so far in 2021 as Gods people at Salendine Nook. Today we find ourselves on the 14th of February. A day that is associated with Love and commitment, Love for one another and commitment to each other. So,

what a wonderful passage we have just looked at for this day. A passage of hope, trust, encouragement, confusion, doubt, love and commitment all centred round a small boy. Does this sound familiar?! A boy who had no idea what was happening or even who God was. He had little or no life experience at all and he was the focus of God’s attention. To me this passage is fantastic, it helps us see so many aspects of what is on offer to us as Christians today, if only we are prepared to listen, accept and act. It has been a particular favourite of mine and I know many others here at Nook for many years and for many reasons. Firstly, there are a vast number of hymns that we can recall as we read this passage. Yes, I’m still missing singing!! It is also a favourite as it was the first passage I ever preached on.
