COURSE NUMBER: CIT140 COURSE TITLE: Office Productivity Applications

SEMESTER CREDITS: 4 HOURS: LECTURE 4

PREREQUISITES: COREQUISITES:

Basic skills using a personal computer or operating system and some basic exposure to Microsoft Office; high school algebra.

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides students with knowledge and skills to effectively use spreadsheet and database productivity applications in a work environment. Students learn through applied and project-based activities that go beyond the mechanics of the software. It engages students to utilize critical thinking activities for applied learning and problem solving. Topics include Microsoft Excel, Access and business applications integration.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Design and develop spreadsheets utilizing the following: basic statistical and financial functions, charts, templates, macros, data transfer between applications (OLE), database processing including pivot tables/charts, Web pages and linked worksheets/workbooks.
2. Solve spreadsheet problems using decision-making tools, such as “what if” analysis, Goal Seek, Solver and Scenario Manager.
3. Design and develop databases utilizing the following: table design with primary key and validations, relationships, forms, queries, reports, switchboards, macros, and charts.
4. Develop automated procedures for spreadsheet and database applications. 5. Assess the efficacy of a computer-based information system in decision-making.

1. Electronic spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel 2. Spreadsheet design concepts and planning a large worksheet 3. Basic statistical and financial functions and operation of spreadsheet software 4. Large worksheet management including formatting, functions, and charts 5. Automated procedures - macros, validation, forms and templates 6. Database processing including filtering, sorting, subtotals, and pivot tables/charts 7. Non-interactive and interactive spreadsheet Web pages 8. Linked worksheets/workbooks 9. Decision-making tools (“what if” analysis, Goal Seek, Solver and Scenario Manager). 10. Database management systems using Microsoft Access 11. Relational database concepts and planning 12. Basic functions and operation of database software 13. Table design with primary key and validations, and defined relationships to other tables 14. Effective forms, queries, reports and charts 15. Automated procedures – macros, switchboards and programming

16. OLE and data integration 17. Assessment of the efficacy of a computer-based information system in decision-making
