Change the default language for Office programs

The 2007 Microsoft Office system uses the Windows operating system default input language to determine the default language for the 2007 Office release programs. When you open a Microsoft Office program, it checks the Windows operating system and uses the default Windows language as the default language. To change the default language in Microsoft Office programs, you must change the default input language in the Windows operating system.
Depending on the language(s) that you have installed on your computer, you can change the default language for the 2007 Microsoft Office system programs to any language that is supported by your version of Microsoft Windows operating system. For example, if the default input language for the Windows operating system is set to English, the default language for all Microsoft Office programs is English. This is true even if you set the display and editing language in Microsoft Office 2007 to another language, such as French or Spanish. The steps to set the default input language in Windows depends on which version of Windows is installed on your computer. To check which version of Windows installed on your computer, see How to tell which software version your computer is using.

Set the default input language in Windows Vista
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Under Clock, Language, and Region, click Change keyboards or other

NOTE In Classic view, double-click Regional and Language Options, and then click the Keyboards and Languages tab.
3. On the Keyboards and Languages tab, click Change keyboards. This displays the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box.
4. Under Default input language, click the language you want to use as the default language, and then go to Step 10.
If the language you want to use as the default input language is not listed, do Steps 5 through 9.
NOTE The default language you click is applied to all programs on your computer that use this setting, including programs from other companies.
5. Under Installed services, click Add. 6. Expand the language that you want to use as the default input language, and
then expand Keyboard. 7. Select the check box for the keyboard or Input Method Editor (IME) (IME: A
program that enters East Asian text (Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) into programs by converting keystrokes into complex East Asian characters. The IME is treated as an alternate type of keyboard layout.) you want to use, and then click OK. The language is added to the Default input language list. 8. Under Default input language, click the language you want to use as the default language. 9. To close the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, click OK. 10. Turn on the language-specific options for the default language in Microsoft Office by doing the following:
a. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2007 Language Settings. This displays the Microsoft Office Language Settings 2007 dialog box.
b. Click the Editing Languages tab. c. In the Primary editing language list, click the primary language in
which you plan to work.
NOTES
If the language you want is not in the Primary editing language list, click the language from the Available editing languages list and add it to the Enabled editing languages list, and then click it in the Primary editing language list. Set the default input language in Windows XP
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click
Regional and Language Options.
NOTE In Classic view, double-click Regional and Language Options.
3. Click the Languages tab, and then under Text services and input languages, click Details. This displays the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box.
4. Under Default input language click the language that you want to use as the default language, and then go to Step 9.
If the language you want to use as the default input language is not listed, do Steps 5 through 8.
