CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study A metaphor is an innovative way of turning emotion into a poem.
According to Newmark, in conveying, a metaphor is used to describe an entity, event, or quality for understanding something in a more complex way than the literal language is used (84). It means that a metaphor conveys the significance of an object by contrasting it to something in general. This unique and complex presentation has led many scholars to explore the study of the metaphor.
Besides that, metaphor is not merely a language or a mere word, but a process of human thought. This process is a conceptual system that comes from the human life experience that is called a conceptual metaphor. According to Lakoff and Johnson, the conceptual system plays an important role in describing the reality of human life, such as language that used in communication when they think and acts as the evidence of the conceptual system is metaphorical in nature (4). It means the metaphor is shaped by human thought and action in everyday life. The translator should be concerned to maintain the natural sense of the target domain.
In defining the metaphor concept, the translator has the struggle especially in literary work such as poetry. Metaphor in poetry usually rich in socio-culture connotations that make the translator is difficult in the translation process. Therefore, the ideal type to translate a metaphor is maintaining the meaning. According to Nida,”the relationship between receptor and message should be substantially the same as which existed between the original receptors and the message (159)”. In this case, the viewpoint is the key to produce the meaning as close as possible from source to target language.
